Spread Some Holiday Cheer
-MadameeGOLB@gmail.com
Ah, ‘tis the season! The end of the year is approaching and it's that time to put together your shopping list and spend your hard-earned money. Or is it? In our economic crunch, many of us have to save every little penny, so that shopping list of gifts may not include very many people. So what can you do? Why not volunteer your time and give back to our community? I have many friends/family members who have said that they have wanted to volunteer but just never made the time to look into it, so this year my gift to some of them is to volunteer with them and make all of the arrangements. By doing this, I not only give to the community, but also give my time to my friends. And the bonding of the experience will last a lifetime.
With Long Beach being such a big city, there are many organizations that are looking for people like you and I. This article will give choices and make it easy for you to decide where you want to spend your time.
St. Mary's Medical Center
St. Mary's in my opinion is one of the best medical providers. Not only do they give back to the community, but the staff is one of the friendliest I have ever come across. There are many volunteer opportunities, including:
Clerical Volunteer
Clerical Volunteers assist with filing, data entry, mailings and a range of other special needs. Volunteers who offer clerical assistance help keep St. Mary Medical Center running around the clock.
Information Desk
Individuals who have good communication skills may want to volunteer their time assisting visitors at the information desk with providing information, answering general questions and directing visitors.
Gift Shop
For those who love to shop, The Gift Shop would be the place to volunteer! The staff at The Gift Shop offers important services to the hospital's patients, families, visitors and employees. All profits from The Gift Shop's sales are donated to the hospital.
Patient Care
Volunteers can also assist hospital staff by distributing reading materials such as newspapers to patients.
Hospital Staff
For those who wish to gain experience and would like to be exposed to a certain department in a hospital; volunteers may be placed in the department of choice to assist staff.
If you would like to volunteer at St. Mary's, please contact Martha McNaughton at (562) 491-2250 or visit their website at www.stmarymedicalcenter.org.
City Of Long Beach Website
The City of Long Beach website is your best bet at finding a number of volunteer opportunities, including:
• Animal care
• The public library system
• Civilian volunteering
• Rancho Los Cerritos Historical Site
Once you decide where you want to volunteer your time, the next step is to fill out a citywide volunteer application. For more information, visit their website at www.longbeach.gov.
Gay and Lesbian Center
Serving over 21,000 people a year, operations of The Center would be impossible without the contributions of volunteers. Last year The Center benefited from over 4,700 volunteer hours. This equaled over $50,000 in equivalent payroll dollars. There are many volunteer opportunities, including:
• Community Help Desk
• Youth Mentor (MYTE Program)
• Accounting/Administrative
• Computer Software Teacher
• Special Event Coordinator
• Mental Health Professionals
• Group Facilitators
In order to be a volunteer with the center, you should fill out an application and criminal background check authorization. From there, you would meet with a volunteer coordinator to discuss current volunteer positions. For more information, visit their website at www.centerlb.org.
This holiday season, give the gift of "you" and celebrate with a peace of mind knowing you did something good!
