Unlucky Number 27

Today marks the 66th birthday of Jim Morrison, born on December 8th, 1943.

As the unpredictable and mysterious frontman for the popular experimental 1960s rock band The Doors, Morrison was only in the public eye for a short six years before mysteriously dying in Paris, France on July 3, 1971 at the age of 27.

I remember when I turned 27. Aside from feeling like years had been abruptly stolen from me, I also remember thinking how young I felt and how little of life I thought I’d seen. Sure I’d traveled to Europe, graduated from college and bought my first brand new car on my own, but I’d never taken trips (the drug-induced kind) or gotten in trouble with the cops. Now, I don’t consider myself less of a person for not having experienced these things (and some might even consider it a good thing—me included, but I’m not judging), but I do feel like I packed less into my then 27 years on this earth than someone like Jim Morrison or the rest of his Rock ‘N Roll counterparts, sometimes referred to as The 27s.

Besides being the same age and packing a lot of living into not so many years, The 27s—most notably comprised of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones and, most recently, Kurt Cobain—were all in the musical spotlight and died in the prime of their lives at too young an age.
