I was 24 years old, newly "out," had no gay friends and just ended my very first year-long, unhealthy gay relationship. I lived in Huntington Beach and had just graduated with a master’s in Behavioral Science. Growing up in Orange County, Long Beach was never a place I considered living, especially because I was trying to hide my sexuality and was afraid of all the "gays" that lived here.

That was 10 years ago and moving to Long Beach was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I moved to a beautiful 10-unit Spanish apartment building and luckily realized not only the diversity of my building (four gays, six straights), but also the diversity of this city. Black, white, gay, straight, old, young…you name it, Long Beach had it. I love this city and am proud that I have the opportunity to share this community with you.

Each week, I will be providing information on organizations that can better enhance our lives; these include non-profit organizations, spiritual churches, ways to overcome addiction and the support needed, gay adoption, diversity, the coming-out process and much more.

I will be blogging about my experiences relating to a specific topic and encourage feedback and questions. Please email me at MadameeGOLB@Gmail.com

Ah, ‘tis the season! The end of the year is approaching and it's that time to put together your shopping list and spend your hard-earned money. Or is it? In our economic crunch, many of us have to save every little penny, so that shopping list of gifts may not include very many people...

PAST ARTICLES:

Coffee, Incense and a Beer!

A coffee shop, a laundry mat, dentist office, local bar, grocery store and a restaurant. These services are all just a block away from where I live. These conveniences are what make living in Long Beach so great for me. With the holiday season in full force (can you believe it?), I decided to focus this article on some of the services and businesses Long Beach offers our community when we need to slow things down and take time for ourselves (or buy a gift for someone else).

Immanuel Community Church

When I was eight years old, one of my fondest memories was attending Sunday church with my grandma. I was one of 35 grandchildren, so whenever grandma told me that she would take me to McDonald's if I went to church with her, I always accepted the offer. It was a chance for me to have one-on-one time with a woman I absolutely adored. And besides, what eight-year-old kid would say no to McDonalds?

Caring & Sharing

It was one of those perfect days in Long Beach: Mid 70's, skies clear and blue. I approached my destination, parked my car and started walking on the sidewalk. Two men were approaching me with white plastic bags in their hand. As our eyes met, they gave me a friendly "hello" just as I was turning right to walk into the building where the AIDS Food Store of Long Beach is located at the Christ Chapel Church at 3935 East 10th Street...

Check it Out!

It was a warm August day. At least 90 degrees outside. However, it felt much warmer in my apartment. To beat the heat inside, I decided to take a walk outside. Taking a long walk, not only clears my mind but allows me to see what an amazing city we live in—the diversity, the buildings, the weather. I had just crossed Cherry and Third Street and saw one of those great 1920s buildings I had never seen in all my time living in Long Beach: the Alamitos Branch of the Long Beach Public Library located at 1836 E. Third Street.  Being that it was so warm outside and I was curious about what it looked like inside, I decided to check it out (no pun intended)... READ MORE
