Welcome to the Arts and Culture section of GetOutLB. I like the old adage, “think globally, act locally.” Our focus is our local area, but it is important for us to continuously acknowledge that we are part of a larger worldwide community—especially since Long Beach is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country. We have roots that reach across the globe. That diversity is reflected in our creative community. There is a flowering of the arts and creativity in this town right now and it is one of the goals of GetOutLB to make sure you are aware of it by providing you with insightful information on everything from the Long Beach Opera and open mic nights to grass roots arts organizations popping up around our city. The arts are important and are intrinsic to our culture. After all, they are the elements in our lives that give us pleasure and passion, and allow us to transcend the everyday in some way. Just think about what you have on your iPod or in your Netflix queue at this very moment. It’s all art to me.

While I’ve never shied away from giving my opinion on anything, it is not my goal to be a critic. This column is about arts and culture advocacy in our city. I think you will find that the LBC is not a cultural vacuum after all, but a thriving and inspired community. You can get my opinion on many things, including discussions on broader art world subjects, in my blog.

Beau has a BA and an MA in the arts and shares the same birthday (year and day) as Pamela Anderson. That gives him so much cache, you don’t even know.  Feel free to send him announcements and information on local arts and cultural events at BeauGOLB@gmail.com

What's Happening with Art Funding?

I’m going to get on my soapbox today and talk about the state of the arts in our city, state and country. Arts organizations are suffering in this economy. Yes, I know that everything and almost everyone is suffering to some extent as a result of the economic situation the country, and particularly California, finds itself in at the moment...

Concrete River Boulevard

This week I had a conversation with writer and CSULB Chicano/Latino Studies teacher, Griselda Suárez. Griselda published her first book of poetry, Concrete River Boulevard, in Maythrough Finishing Line Press. Although we have never met, we have mutual friends that have told me for years that I had to meet Griselda, so I felt like I already knew her.

Winter Festival Concert

The holidays are upon us. For a lot of us that just means extra stress, but there are some fun benefits to the season. Personally, I love the lighted trees floating in the waterways of Long Beach and walking through Naples with a to-go cup while the fog rolls in. It’s just a great time of year. We have the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade on December 5th...

Historic Rose Park

In Southern California it seems that the new has always won over the historic, but over the past several years that mindset has begun to change in the city of Long Beach. You may have noticed Historic District signs popping up around the city over the last several years. This designation not only showcases the history of domestic architecture in our city, but the designation will help preserve these areas for the future. Historic districts are usually areas that have a substantial number of homes that have remained intact and unchanged. In other words, someone hasn’t bastardized the original style of the homes in the area... READ MORE

LBCreative! is Building Community

A few weeks ago I was invited to attend a Connections Meeting held by LBCreative! at Immanuel Community Church in Long Beach. I had no expectations, but I happily found myself sitting in a circle with a group of people who were passionate about the arts and their community.  Introductions were made, then the assembly splintered off into smaller interest groups, the overarching attitude was “go with the group you want, wherever you feel like you can contribute.”...
