La Palapa
-MaverickGOLB@gmail.com

It was such a nice warm day out and I was a little hungry. I wanted to go get a bite to eat, but not at a typical restaurant. You know, one where you go in, sit down, eat and leave. I wanted something more. I wanted to people-watch and enjoy the sun as much as I could since I knew the cold season would be creeping up soon. I’m not a fan of winter, so the more I can enjoy the sun and heat, the happier I am.

I decided to hop in my car and just drive. I didn’t really have a set place in mind. I drove toward 2nd street and remembered that La Palapa has a great patio area with a view of the beach where I could sit down and people-watch. It was the perfect place to not only enjoy the sun, but also some good food and good ambiance.

As I sat in the patio area I realized I wanted to take my time and not rush through my meal, but thoroughly enjoy every aspect of it. I ordered the best drink that could go with such a perfect day, a Mojito! It was so delicious!

I remember being here before and seeing weddings on the beach. I was curious about those and whether or not La Palapa had anything to do with them. Turns out, La Palapa caters those weddings. I also did not know that there is a second story that is a hall or banquet room. La Palapa can cater to large parties or weddings upstairs and on the beach.

La Palapa is a family-owned restaurant that started off as a fine dining Italian restaurant.  The owners went to Puerto Vallarta on a trip, saw palapas and decided to make it a part of the restaurant. For those who don’t know what a palapa is, it’s an open-sided structure with a thatched roof that is kind of like a grass hut. The owner’s daughter is an architect and she helped them design it. This brought in a more relaxed, comfortable look, rather than the fine dining restaurant that it started off as. The restaurant is also dog-friendly which has helped it become quite popular. People with dogs can sit on the patio and still enjoy a great meal; not many restaurants can compete with that.

I will let you in on a little secret: prices are going to be cut down. I know that sounds very appealing, especially since the economy isn’t at its best. The best part about this is that food will be cheaper, but you can still enjoy the entertainment and happy hour part of the restaurant. That must be one of the best deals around town if you ask me. Make sure to keep an eye out for when they start lowering their prices.

The food is Latin-, American- and Italian-influenced. I would say the food is good and moderately priced, but that’s not what makes me want to come back. The atmosphere and view of the restaurant are what bring me back again and again. Just being able to be in a relaxed, casual environment where I’m not rushed is very appealing to me. I would say this is a great place to come when you have time to spare.
